Substance misuse is the harmful use of substances (like drugs and alcohol) for non-medical purposes. The term “substance misuse” often refers to illegal drugs. However, legal substances can also be misused, such as alcohol, prescription medications, caffeine, nicotine and volatile substances.
The team at Haven Hills addresses the misuse of substances as a symptom of the underlying challenges that our clients have faced. While it is imperative that we engage in opportunities to explore how these substances have affected relationships, school, career, and overall quality of life, we must also come alongside those we are working with to explore the role substances have had in coping with trauma, grief and loss, issues surrounding self-worth, weight management, and family dynamics.
By focusing on the relationship between substance misuse and these deeper core issues, rather than looking at the substance problem as an isolated problem, our clients begin the resolve what sits beneath the misuse, moving toward a life of sustainable, long-term recovery.
